Message from the Senior Director, Fall 2008
Autumn is approaching and it is getting towards the time to start thinking warming thoughts. That’s hard to do especially after the heat wave we had during the first part of June. Hope everyone stayed cool for that!
The senior club monthly meeting is held the first Wednesday of each month at 1 PM. At 12:30 there is a blood pressure screening by the Foothills Visiting Nurse and Health Care. After the meeting, which is around 1:30 there is a speaker or a fun activity.
March’s monthly meeting was held later in the day in order to have our St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Jack McCardle’s School of Irish Dance performed and A.C.’s Eatery in Torrington provided the corned beef and cabbage, which was out of this world! A great big THANK YOU goes out to New Hartford’s Commission on Aging, who very kindly provided the funds for that wonderful dinner.
In April, the Lunch and Movie at the Gilson was very well received. From all reports, everyone had a wonderful time and the proprietor of the Gilson Theater provided a wonderful lunch. I think we’ll do it again! April’s speaker was Roxanne from Aerie Mountain in Barkhamsted, who educated us on the fine art of establishing butterfly gardens. Who knew their favorite color is purple?!? (Mine too!)
May was Older Americans Month and we had some extra special events planned. The regular monthly meeting featured cake and ice cream to celebrate the New Hartford Senior Club’s 35th anniversary. Also, Jean Lafave presented the updated club bylaws to be voted on in August. On May 14, our annual spring luncheon was held at Marino’s Restaurant in Torrington, and a good time was had by all. We had a choice of roast sirloin, stuffed breast of chicken, or seafood casserole preceded by fresh fruit cocktail and finishing off with lemon crème cake and coffee. It was a fabulous meal and a great time! On May 20, KT Worth of Beautiful Things Boutique of Barkhamsted gave a fascinating talk about feng shui, the ancient Asian art of placement in the home to create positive energy and on May 22, the Senior Center hosted an open house to celebrate Older Americans Month. There was lots of yummy food, fabulous door prizes donated by New Hartford merchants, and a huge cake donated by River Ridge assisted living of Avon. Special thanks go out to Chatterly’s, The Head Shoppe, Nails by Shelly, Marandino’s, massage therapist Mindy Lee Church, New Hartford Junction, Passiflora, and River Ridge of Avon for all the wonderful goods and services donated.
June’s monthly meeting was held at the North Congregational Church so that we could accommodate Sullivan Senior Center’s wonderful singing group, The Silver Belles and Beaux. What a fantastic, enthusiastic group of men and women who entertained us! A cookies and punch reception followed the performance. The New Hartford Senior Club held its SENIOR PROM on June 20 at the Senior Center. A good time was had by all with good food, good friends, and GREAT MUSIC provided free of charge by DJ JACQUE WILLIAMS from Torrington, who played all those songs remembered from our youth.
September is membership month but you can join anytime during the year for just $7.50. Our membership is growing. Come join the fun! Our current activities include: fitness classes, Monday morning coffee hour, line dancing, a crafts group, Bingo, a Friday morning walking club, yoga, and a monthly book club. Massage therapist Mindy Lee Church comes to the center on the third Tuesday of the month and administers relaxing 15-minute chair massages for the discounted price of $10.
September’s meeting will feature Fred Tedesco who will talk about the ever-growing problem of identity theft. In November, the fascinating Ted Veling will give a presentation about the Holocaust. Call Jean Barnicoat at 379-3980 with questions about any of the activities.
The Busy Bee craft group is knitting and crocheting scarves for the Orphan Foundation of America’s Red Scarf Project to be distributed around Valentine’s Day to foster children in college who have aged out of foster care. Seniors Supporting Soldiers (SSS) is an ongoing project, which sends packages to New Hartford area soldiers serving overseas. We welcome donations of items to send or cash to help defray the cost of postage. There is a list of acceptable items at the senior center. Call Jean B. if you would like a copy of this list.
Stop in to the Senior Center for a calendar or click on “Seniors” on the town website which is http://www.town.new-hartford.ct.us/. We continue making FREE bi- monthly bus trips to places of interest as well as the bi-monthly shopping trips on alternating months. You must be a senior center member to participate in these trips. Space is limited to 12 passengers. These free trips are made possible through a grant by the Northwestern CT Transit District. Upcoming are trips to Mystic Aquarium and Connecticut Creative in Hartford.
Check us out on the web or stop in and say “hi” and find out why “Seniors have more fun!”
